The Template Manager lets you preview and edit your installed Joomla! templates. Templates are extensions that control the look and layout of a Joomla! site. There are two types of templates: Site templates for the site’s front-end, and Administrator templates for the site’s back-end. To learn more about templates, go to What are Joomla! templates?
Accessing the Template Manager
To access the Template Manager, first log in to the Joomla! administrator interface or back-end using the administrator Username and Password. Make sure the administrator is assigned to the Super Users group.
Once you’re in the administrator Control Panel, you can access the Template Manager in one of two ways:
From the Control Panel sidebar
In the Control Panel sidebar, click Templates.
From the administrator main menu
To access the Template Manager from anywhere in the administrator interface, select Extensions > Templates on the main menu.
Template Manager Styles screen
You should now see the Template Manager Styles screen displaying a table of installed Joomla! templates.
By default, the screen displays front-end (Site) templates. To view back-end templates, select Administrator in the Site dropdown.
You use the Styles screen to preview a template (click the Eye icon), edit a template’s styles (click the template’s name), and change the default template (see How to switch a Joomla! template). The current default template is marked with a yellow star.
Template Manager Templates screen
The Template Manager also has a Templates screen. To display the Templates screen, click the Templates link on the sidebar. You can also access the screen from the main menu by selecting Extensions > Templates > Templates.
The Templates screen also displays a table of the installed templates and, like the Styles screen, you can use the Site dropdown to toggle between front-end (Site) and back-end (Administrator) templates.
You use the Templates screen to preview a template (click the Preview link), and edit a template’s files (click the template’s name). To change the Joomla! default template, you must go back to the Styles screen (see How to switch a Joomla! template).
